Snap Selects Qualcomm to Power Specs AR Glasses

Snap has chosen Qualcomm to power the next generation of its standalone augmented reality glasses, Specs, with a consumer launch planned for late 2026. In its 10 April 2026 announcement, Snap’s extended reality division, Specs Inc., confirmed that future Specs models will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR system-on-chip platforms.

Specs Inc. and Qualcomm Technologies established a multi-year strategic agreement. Future Specs models will use Snapdragon XR platforms for on-device computing. The two companies will collaborate on on-device artificial intelligence, graphics, and multi-user digital experiences.

Snap noted that earlier generations of its Spectacles products have used Qualcomm hardware. The latest agreement continues the existing relationship between the two companies rather than introducing a new supplier.

The announcement also links the Qualcomm collaboration with Snap’s planned consumer rollout. The company confirmed it will release Specs to consumers later in 2026. This follows an earlier June 2025 communication when Snap set a 2026 release window for a lighter, consumer-focused version of the product. At that time, Snap described Specs as transparent smart glasses that place digital content into the physical environment, rather than relying on a handheld display.

The Qualcomm agreement follows Snap’s earlier changes to its augmented reality operations. On 28 January 2026, the company created Specs Inc. as a wholly owned subsidiary. The move intends to provide greater operational focus for the glasses business, enable partnership flexibility, and support the planned public launch of Specs later in 2026.

By creating Specs Inc., Snap separates the augmented reality glasses initiative into a dedicated business unit. This structure aims to support development and strengthen coordination with project partners.

Snap plans to operate Specs as a standalone augmented reality platform. The company says the glasses interpret what users see and hear, support voice- and hand-based controls, and perform more processing on the device. This approach intends to provide faster responses and increase customer privacy.

Snap’s release will place it among companies developing consumer AR devices. Meta, Google, Samsung, and Apple are also advancing wearable technologies.

The expanded agreement with Qualcomm is part of Snap’s preparation for the Specs release. Snapdragon XR platforms will provide the technical base for future product versions.
